Cross-shelf movement of Chrysaora fulgida (Scyphozoa; Discomedusae) off Namibia inferred from stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C)

چکیده
Large and small specimens of two species metagenic Scyphozoa (true jellyfishes) can be found in nearshore waters off central Namibia throughout the year. Whereas populations Chrysaora africana are largely restricted to inshore waters, C. fulgida occurs across shelf, with individuals large primarily offshore. We examined stable isotopes δ15N δ13C both Walvis Bay that large-sized have lower values than These differences interpreted reflect cross-shelf changes baseline levels, greater nitrogen recycling (and hence values) occurring The occasional/seasonal appearance low therefore implies routine, onshore advection. did not show differences, which suggests jellyfish shelf supported by phytoplankton-based food chains. This study emphasises value using examine mesoscale structuring populations. Keywords: africana, coastal upwelling, eastern boundary currents, energy flow, jellyfish, metagenesis, molecular markers

Stable δ15N and δ13C isotope ratios in aquatic ecosystems
In the past 20 years, rapid progress in stable isotope (SI) studies has allowed scientists to observe natural ecosystems from entirely new perspectives. This report addresses the fundamental concepts underlying the use of the SI ratio. The unique characteristics of the SI ratio make it an interdisciplinary parameter that acts as a chemical fingerprint of biogenic substances and provides a key t...
متن کاملTrophic relationships of exotic anadromous salmonids in the southern Patagonian Shelf as inferred from stable isotopes
On the basis of their thermal preferences, salmon introduced in South America can distribute over the whole Southern Patagonian Shelf Ecosystem (SPSE). Stable isotope (d13C and d15N) data show that the SPSE is dominated by zooplanktivorous species (15 of 37), and its community is distributed over six trophic levels (TL), with salmonids occupying levels 4.2 to 4.9. A dual isotope mixing model wa...

Application of Nitrogen and Carbon Stable Isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) to Quantify Food Chain Length and Trophic Structure
Increasingly, stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ(15)N) and carbon (δ(13)C) are used to quantify trophic structure, though relatively few studies have tested accuracy of isotopic structural measures. For laboratory-raised and wild-collected plant-invertebrate food chains spanning four trophic levels we estimated nitrogen range (NR) using δ(15)N, and carbon range (CR) using δ(13)C, which are us...
متن کاملIsotopic discrimination of stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) in a host-specific holocephalan tapeworm.
During the past decade, parasites have been considered important components of their ecosystems since they can modify food-web structures and functioning. One constraint to the inclusion of parasites in food-web models is the scarcity of available information on their feeding habits and host-parasite relationships. The stable isotope approach is suggested as a useful methodology to determine th...
